Hoosiers Urged To Prepare For Coming Winter

“When it comes to getting ready for winter, personal responsibility is key,” said IDHS Executive Director Joe Wainscott. “Don’t wait until a few hours before a snow or ice storm to stock up on supplies—start preparing now. Once your family is ready for winter storms, check with any elderly neighbors, lower income families or families with young children that might need help obtaining extra blankets, warm clothes or other essentials to keep them warm and safe.”

“We saw last year how ice and snow can debilitate our communities,” says John Lyter, CEO of the American Red Cross Indianapolis Region. “We need to prepare ourselves now so we keep our families safe this winter.”

IDHS and the American Red Cross offer these tips for preparing your home for winter.

Home Readiness

  • Check your homeowner’s insurance policy to make sure coverage is adequate for the type of winter weather in your area. Learn what is excluded from the policy.
  • Remove dead tree branches. Ice and snow, combined with winter winds can cause limbs to snap and break and could do damage to your home.
  • Clean gutters. Snow and ice can build up quickly, especially if your gutters are clogged with debris. When thawing begins, water from melting ice has nowhere to drain and can back up under your roof and eaves, causing water damage to walls and ceilings. Consider buying screens to keep your gutters debris-free.
  • Make sure auxiliary heaters and fireplaces are adequately maintained and serviced. Many fires related to alternative heating sources are preventable through proper maintenance. Before installing a wood-burning stove, check with local fire officials about codes and proper installation techniques. Do not store kerosene in a non-approved container or in your home and be sure to keep alternative heat sources from flammable materials (walls, curtains, etc.). For more information about using alternative heat sources safely, visit GetPrepared.in.gov.

Emergency Preparedness Kit

  • Make sure that your emergency preparedness kit is complete, with fresh supplies.
  • Along with your kit, keep extra blankets and warm clothes easily accessible in case you have to find them in a power outage.
  • Stock up on extra food and water. After a winter storm you may be snowed in or without electricity for a few days.
  • Remember to consider the needs of all family members, such as babies and older adults. Keep extra prescription medicines available in case you are snowed in. Don’t forget your pets!

Whiteland Volunteer Fire Department Goes To Zoreland In Indianapolis For Training...

Zoreland is a Indiana Department of Homeland Security Certified Training Center offering the location to all emergency services in the State. Zoreland was created by Zores Towing & Recovery which responds to all types of rescue scenes to recovery vehicles from motor vehicle accidents as well as standard towing.

Zoreland is set up for all types of scenario training for emergency services. Extrication  from small motor vehicles to School Buses, Heavy Equipment, and Semi-Tractor Trailer accidents. Not limited to just extrication, but more than the mind could imagine...if you can think of it Zoreland can provide it.

No need for concern about your local fire department using their tools and taking their equipment out of service, because tool dealers from around the state have donated the equipment needed for emergency services to train with leaving their apparatus to stay in service to serve their communities. All of this has been provided at no cost to the fire departments nor the communities they serve. Zores Towing has gone above and beyond to work with emergency services to allow for a fantastic training location.

Whiteland Volunteer Fire Department went to Zoreland on February 20, 2011 and performed several scenarios for extrication cutting apart a total of 4 cars including a 1996 Saab that was on it's roof inside of a roll off large dumpster. This was to simulate a vehicle located in confined space only allowing access through the trunk of the vehicle to recover any passengers inside of the vehicle. This is a rare situation, but the leaders of the Whiteland Volunteer Fire Department recognize the need to offer specialized situational scenarios. It was truly a successful training and looking forward to more in the very near future. Special thanks to Zores Towing & Recovery, and Fire Service Inc as well as Para Tech & TNT Tools for the use of their power tools to be able to do these intensive trainings.

February 10, 2011 Approximately 8:00 a.m. reports of a house with smoke and flame showing came into the 911 system. Units from Whiteland, New Whiteland, Franklin, Greenwood, & Bargersville Fire Department as well as Police Officers from Whiteland & New Whiteland Police Department responded to the scene.

First arriving units made entry into the residence and attempted to due a search and extinguish the fire. Moments later firefighters were called out in an evacuation of all units by the commanding fire officers on scene due to overwhelming dangers.

Once the fire was controlled and more stable, firefighters were able to re-enter the residence to due their primary and secondary searches as well as extinguish the rest of the fire.

The two adult and 8 children family was not home at the time of the fire leaving the residence unoccupied during fire operations. Family was notified with the help of Johnson County Sheriffs Department to notify the fire command that no occupants were at the home.

Utility companies as well as town of Whiteland were called in to assist with shutting down utilities. Town of Whiteland provided ice melting agents that assisted firefighters walking around on sheets of ice due to the frigid temperatures of the day.

Spring Weather Brings Storm Potentials... Are You Ready???

Staying Safe in Spring Storms

Spring brings much-needed relief from winter, but it also is prime season for tornadoes, thunderstorms and floods.

Being prepared for severe weather is vital to the safety of you and your family. Consider these safety tips:

  • Thunderstorms – If you can hear thunder, lightning is a danger. Take shelter if skies look threatening. Stay indoors, away from doors and windows. Avoid taking a shower or bath, and using the telephone. Because lightening can travel through electrical lines, turn off or unplug all electrical appliances.
  • Tornadoes – Tornadoes are often accompanied by heavy rain, thunder, lightning or hail. In threatening weather, listen for authorized watches and warnings. If a tornado warning alarm sounds, take cover in a basement or first-floor, interior room without windows. Never stay inside a mobile home or take shelter beneath one; go to the nearest shelter or take cover in a ditch or depression in the ground away from the home.
  • Floods – Floodwaters are extremely powerful. Just two feet of water can sweep away a car and as little as six inches can cause unstable footing. Remember that flood conditions change rapidly and water can be much deeper than it appears. If your home floods, turn off utilities and keep them off until authorities say it's safe to turn them on. Don’t pump water out of your basement until floodwater recedes. Avoid flood-weakened structures and be aware that floodwaters can be contaminated.

Create a disaster kit

A disaster kit is essential in severe weather or an emergency. Here are some basic items that should be kept together in a safe, waterproof and easy-to-access area:

  • First aid kit, including your family members' medications
  • Canned food and a can opener
  • Bottled water
  • Clothing
  • Battery-powered radio
  • Flashlights and extra batteries
  • Written instructions on how to turn off electricity, gas and water

School Is BACK IN SESSION!!!!

BE CAREFUL AND SLOW DOWN!!!

The Indiana State Police is offering the following school bus safety tips and urging motorists to watch out for the increased school bus and pedestrian traffic expected around Indiana.

Parents should put everything children carry in a backpack or school bag so items are not dropped or lost along the way.

• Children should leave home on time so they can walk to the bus stop and arrive on time.

• Students should stand away from the edge of the road to protect them from traffic.

• Students should make eye contact with the bus driver and stay at least 10 giant steps away from the bus so the bus driver can see the students as they enter or exit the bus. Students should wait until the bus driver signals them to proceed.

• Never pick up items dropped near the bus. The bus driver may not see children go back for dropped papers. Papers can be replaced. Do not go back to pick them up!

• When riding the bus students should be respectful of their school bus drivers and the tremendous responsibility they have for the safe transportation of students.

• When approaching a school bus, from any direction, which is stopped with its flashing red lights activated and its stop arm extended, motorists are required to STOP.

• Motorists who are on a highway that is divided by a barrier or unimproved median are required to stop only if they are traveling the same direction as the school bus.

Disregarding a school bus stop arm is a serious violation and one that school bus drivers are quick to report. Violation of this law is a Class A infraction and is punishable by a maximum fine of $10,000.

The parade will begin Saturday July 17, 2010 in Franklin at approximately 3:00p.m.

Whiteland Volunteer Fire Department is proud to be a strong representative of the community in this parade. Whiteland Volunteer Fire Department has the prestigious honor to provide emergency medical service to the grandstands at the Johnson County Fair during all of the shows. We do not take this lightly and find it truly special to be able to work with all of the wonderful people at the fairgrounds. We hope to see you all at the fair the week of July 18 - 24 at the Johnson County Fairgrounds in Franklin, Indiana. Holland Invades WVFD

Sunday May02, 2010

Whiteland Volunteer Firefighters were honored to meet a great group of visiting firefighters and ems personnel from Holland. The firefighters were part of Brandweer Fire Brigade & EMS were from KIJLSTRA Ambulancegroep out of Fryslan Holland.

The visitors were given a tour of the fire trucks and equipment used and were even given a chance to handle our the WVFD equipment noting the major differences in equipment and how both countries fight fires with different equipment. The group was also given a special tour of the Whiteland Volunteer Fire Department.

The group of seven were then treated to a wonderful lunch at Kasey's Restaurant a true staple of Whiteland and commented on how good the food was in Whiteland.

The group was supposed to be in Indiana during the FDIC firefighters conference held downtown Indianapolis April 19-24 this year. Unfortunately due to the volcanic ash from Iceland their trip was postponed to this past week not allowing them to be a part of the FDIC. Several Agencies including:

Whiteland Volunteer Fire Department

Rural Metro Ambulance

Greenwood Fire Department

White River Township Fire Department

Indianapolis Fire Department

All of these agencies came together and gave them private tours of their stations and equipment. The group was also given special tours of the city as well as surrounding venues to entertain them while they were in town.

The group commented repeatedly "Americans are wonderful people and made them all feel at home...IT IS GOOD!!!"

So special thanks to all of the wonderful people who made their stay so wonderful.

Information About Thunderstorms

Thunderstorm Facts
Thunderstorms affect relatively small areas compared to hurricanes and winter storms, but despite their small size, all thunderstorms are dangerous! Of the estimated 100,000 thunderstorms that occur each year in the United States, about 10 percent are classified as severe.

The National Weather Service considers a thunderstorm severe if it produces hail at least 3/4-inch in diameter, winds of 58 mph or stronger, or a tornado.

Strong winds can exceed 100 mph, causing damage equal to a tornado. Hail causes more than $1 billion in crop and property damage each year. Large stones fall at speeds faster than 100 mph.

Eighteen thousand thunderstorms are occurring at any moment around the world. That's 16 million a year!

Appropriate actions to take during a severe thunderstorm

  • Seek shelter in a building or vehicle immediately.

  • Shutter windows, close window blinds, shades, or curtains and secure outside doors.

  • Avoid showering or bathing, as plumbing and bathroom fixtures can conduct electricity.

  • Use a corded telephone only for emergencies. Cordless and cell phones are safe to use.

  • Unplug appliances and other electrical items, such as computers, and turn off air conditioners. Power surges from lightning can cause serious damage

  • Keep abreast of the latest weather forecasts and prepare for possible tornadoes.

Planning and preparedness help to minimize weather related deaths and injuries and property damage. Every family, school and business should take time now to review or create a severe weather safety action plan. The statewide tornado drills scheduled for tomorrow provide an excellent time to practice these plans.

The emergency alert system will be activated statewide tomorrow, March 17, at 10:15-10:30 a.m. EDT and again at 7:35-7:50 p.m. EDT on commercial radio, television networks all hazards radios
